About Us

Mission Statement

This website has been setup primarily to be an informative one stop shop for all matters relating to the BR fleet of class 90 locomotives in operational, technical, and interest terms.

It is also a building block for other great innovative ideas such as preservation - the site focuses on the past, present and future.

Website Aims

Welcome to the Class 90 Electric Loco Group (CNELG) which was founded in June 2009 with the original site going live on 19/6/09, which means we are now officially 1 years old.

My name is David and I am the site developer as well as the co-founder of the group - some of the users may have seen me about at various times in the past travelling up and down the country on class 90 traction. As time goes on I shall add peoples photo’s of CNELG here as well as a short profile of themselves.

Personal - Site Owner

The class 90 entered its 22nd year of operations on July 12th 2010, after 90003 worked the 13:40 Blackpool North from Preston to Euston on July 12th 1988 following the failure of 86413 - the train in question was routed via Becsot and the West Midlands. This event seemed the ideal platform  to develop a site and was the key driving force behind the idea.

Interesting to note that the 90s were once to be classified as 87/2s, but this never materialised. It is understood that the reclassification was a result of the engine’s implementation date.

On a personal note I am what some people might call a 'hardcore' class 90 follower - these engines have interested me ever since they came out of Crewe works all those years ago when I was just a young man (happy days) having been to an open day at BREL in July 1987.

Admittedly my favourite engine is 90008 - why you might ask! Well in the early days whenever I went for a 90 on the WCML more often than not it was no.8 and it sounded 'hellfire' :-) so it became my machine. I am sure other people who follow other classes of loco can relate to this concept!

One thing I have come across over the years is the class 90s have not always had a high profile following or interest. It this ethos that I hope to change by means of the website particularly as the class 90 fleet are now ageing (now entered its 22nd year of operations) and they do form a part of our engineering heritage.

In a professional context, I hold chartered status of the CILT and work in Railway Operational Planning - this is a keen interest of mine which overlaps into my hobby. Academically I have studied transport including railways at BSc and MSc level. It is this wealth of knowledge, passion, professionalism and interest that I hope to off-set to others by means of this website.

Finally, I do hope at some point to add more names and profiles to this page.
