The history of the class 90 fleet has been broken down into various categories; background information, liveries, technical, operational routes, and nameplates including naming's. This website is dedicated to the BR built class 90s, which were manufactured and assembled in Crewe Works by BREL from 1985 until completion in 1990 under contract to GEC. The original fleet size consisted of 50 locomotives numbered 90001-90050 and were allocated to mixed traffic operations.....

Liveries:

Liveries

Over the years the 90s have seen 19 different liveries of various shades and colour during their 23 year history. The latest one was unveiled on July 13th 2010. This came in the form of the Freightliner Powerhaul colour-scheme, firstly being applied to 90045, and later 90049, see Youtube clip sample.....

The Class 90s were built as 4 axle Bo-Bo type locomotives with GEC designed engines with Thyristor control (see table) and were built in Crewe by BREL under contract by GEC from 1985 to 1990. It is interesting to note that the 90s were originally going to be 87/2s, but this was changed.....

This section of the site details all of the names ever applied to the class 90 fleet during their historic years. There have been a number of loco’s that were never named - this includes most of the Freightliner fleet notably 90049. The last 90 to be named was 90010 which took place on 17/06/11.....

Since the 90s were first introduced in the late 1980's, there flagship route has always been the WCML. We look back at some of the key highlights from the past 23 years. The original allocation of 90s saw 90001-90025 working passenger, with the remainder of the fleet assigned to freight.....
